  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from kd -- Very disappointing : I agree with all of the 1 and 2 star reviews on here...this book was a total waste of money and it told me what I already know and what I already do with my dog (which doesn't currently work, which is why I ordered the book). In the "to prevent this/do this" picture posted, I love how all of of these fixes are temporary. My dog is a year old. No, I will not put him in a separate room every time the doorbell rings (like I can predict that anyway?) for the next 9-12+ more years of his life. I want him to be ok with people who come in my house and not bark his head off constantly. Unfortunately, this book did not help me with that answer. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hokie97Top Contributor: Pets -- I recommend this book to EVERYONE, no matter how much you think you know about dogs. : I was recommended this book by my dog's board certified behaviorist. I was initially hesitant to purchase a book on dog behavior, as I have been a Licensed Veterinary Technician for over 15 years, and I worked closely with a good dog trainer for my rescue dog for over a year. I figured I paid all that money to see a behaviorist, what was another $15? ( Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Duke1004 -- This book is a joke! : While this book might hold some interest for a limited number of people, I could not read more than a few pages into it. Among the rather remarkable assertions that wolves do NOT have a hierarchy and feral dogs do not form packs, both ideas have been proven false by many more knowledgeable authorities than these two supposed experts. I have personally read many books written by people who have spent their entire lives studying wolves and their social interactions who all have witnessed a rather intricate hierarchy among the pack. Also many studies have shown that when food is plentiful, feral dogs do operate in smaller numbers but when food is scarce they certainly do form larger packs. The authors of this book give no references to this type of generalization but rather simply state it as fact. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cristina -- Absolutely a "must have" for all dog owners ... : Excellent book for those who want understand dogs and train their dog the correct way, meaning without inflicting unnecessary pain of all that nonsense about wolves (dogs are not wolves! No more than we are Bonobo or other chimps). ( Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2018 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Irish Reviewer -- Not great : I did not find this text to be very well written. I have read a number of books on this subject previously and found all of them to be better than this. The style of writing is not very engaging. The content is very light and does not offer very much in the way of new findings or research in this area. Though perhaps if this was a person's first read around the topic that would not be a real issue. Also the physical quality of the paper in the book is very grainy and grey in colour. The photographic images are of very poor quality ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Corvin -- A Must for Any Dog Owner! Brilliant! : Can't recommend this highly enough. Written in and easy to understand way, by Professionals and covers anything any dog owner needs to know about their dog, how they think, their behaviour and how to modify it. Techniques are modern, up to date and humane. A MUST for any dog owner. You think you know dogs, you don't! Learnt so much from reading this book. Highly recommended. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Rottygal -- Very Disappointing - If you are an experienced dog owner this is a waste of money. : I was so excited to read this book as it had great reviews. I have had dogs all my life and my current companion has issues with other dogs and I wanted to learn why and how to help him. This was much too novice owner orientated - and whilst what it says is good it is basic stuff that anyone who has had dogs for a number of years will know. Very disappointing and for me a waste of money. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from kathleen houghton -- It’s writt in America for a vets college : It’s easy to understand and my vet recommended it ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 4, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gmanmontreal -- Excellent behavioural mod solutions! : This is a great book for answering difficult behavioural training questions for giving puppies and dogs and their owners the best possible shot at making the most out of life together. I purchased this book after finding not much help from some other available solutions after getting a border collie puppy again, 14 years after my first one. I needed help with house training and ideas for how to prep him to be well behaved and able to overcome fears in social situations generally. I disagree with dominance theory and that dogs are like wolves, etc. who must have a dominant alpha in you or your relationship will suffer. In fact, the opposite is true - if your dog fears you, you create more problems. The book also points to research that traditional theory of wolves having a dominant pack leader is incorrect - that only happened in a situation of wolves in captivity. The book recommends practical solutions based on examples of research and positive reinforcement training. Each chapter is written by one or more master canine behaviorists and is easy to read. Highly recommended. ( Reviewed in Canada on December 18, 2019 )
